Volkswagen brand has launched the newest member of its ID family of full-electric vehicles, the ID5 coupe-styled crossover coupe, with updated software that improves functions such as voice control and driver assistance.

The ID5 is the third European VW model on the MEB platform, following the ID3 compact hatchback and the ID4 SUV. The ID5 will be built at VW's factory in Zwickau, Germany, and will go on sale next year, the automaker said without offering specifics.

It is closely related to the ID4, but has a curving rear body shape that improves aerodynamics and follows a recent trend toward coupe-styled SUVs and crossovers.

VW says the ID5 loses just 12 mm in rear passenger headroom versus the ID4, but still allows for a 549-liter trunk. In comparison, the ID4 has 543 liters of trunk space.

The standard ID5 is 4599 mm long, making it slightly bigger than the ID4 at 4584 mm. Different bumpers used on the GTX version make it shorter at 4582 mm.

VW says a proportionally long wheelbase of 2766 mm gives it an interior space comparable to larger SUVs.

The base ID5 has rear-wheel drive and a single electric motor with two power options, while the GTX version has a second motor at the front axle and all-wheel drive. The GTX has a 0 to 100 kph (62 mph) time of 6.3 seconds, VW says.

Maximum range from the largest 77 kilowatt-hour battery is 520 km (323 miles), while the heavier GTX version has a range of 490 km. VW did not provide full specifications for all versions.

Updated software
The car debuts VW ID software version 3.0, which the automaker says improves functions such as voice control. The ID5 can respond to voice commands within 7 seconds, VW says.

The software will also activate more capability in semi-autonomous driving functions, for example, automatic lane changing after turn signals are deployed, provided it is safe to do so.

Optional Park Assist Plus with memory function will automatically park the car in a saved position such as leaving room on one side of a driveway.

The 3.0 version of the ID software also enables car-to-car communication with other VW Group vehicles equipped with the same software, allowing them to warn of dangers ahead.

VW ID customers are currently using software 2.3, according to reports from owner forums. All compatible ID cars will be upgraded to software 3.0.

In addition to VW's ID4, possible competitors for the ID5 include the Ford Mustang Mach E, lower-priced versions of the Tesla Model Y, as well as new full-electric crossovers from Hyundai Group, the Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6.

There are several mainstream coupe-styled SUVs on the market, including the Renault Arkana and Toyota CH-R.
