The British news agency "PA Media" reported today, Thursday, that a rare male rhino was born in Flamingoland Park in the town of Kirby Missperton, near Malton, North Yorkshire, on Sunday afternoon after a 16-month pregnancy for his mother. The rhino, whose name has not yet been named, is the first eastern black rhino to be born in Yorkshire, and represents a continuation of the zoo's efforts to preserve the species, which had seen the release of two rhinos to be released into the wild in Africa. The little boy was born to a mother named "Samira", who was transferred to Flamingoland from the Zurich Zoo in 2015, while his father, Magdy, had arrived from Chester Zoo in 2019, and zookeepers watched the first moments of the newborn in life through a network of cameras. "We've waited so long for this little boy, both mommy and baby are doing very well, and I'm so proud of Samira and all her keepers," said Flamingoland chief ranger Sam Debell. It is noteworthy that there are only 85 animals of the eastern black rhino in European zoos, and no more than 3,600 animals of this species in the wild in Kenya and Tanzania.
