She sings, plays guitar, guitar, piano and also composes her own songs. Despite being relatively unknown outside of Japan, it gained some international recognition with the song "Life", the fifth ending theme alongside the song "Rolling Star", the fifth opening of the po[CENSORED]r anime series Bleach, and currently on the anime series Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, with the song "Again". Her first album, From Me To You, was released on February 22, 2006 and received rave reviews. The album was a success, reaching ninth on the weekly charts in Japan. The lead single, "Tokyo", reached the fourth position on the MTV Japan charts. At age 11, on the recommendation of a friend, she began studying music, guitar and composition at a private music school in her hometown of Fukuoka. Wishing to become a professional, she picked up her guitar and sang in public places like the Shingu coast and in the middle of the Kaminofu rice fields. In March 2004, at a Sony Music Japan audition, all judges rated her with the highest score, which caused a frenzy among publishers. At the audition she sang three songs - "Why Me", "It's Happy Line" and "I Know" - although participants were only allowed to sing two songs. Sitting cross-legged on the floor, she played the guitar and sang. The judges and others present stated that "the performance created a tremendous aura from her voice, and it captivated the hearts of the entire audience." After leaving Fukuoka for Tokyo, YUI wrote the song "Feel My Soul". She was planning to release it on an independent publisher as a tribute to her homeland, when the song reached the ears of Fuji TV producer Mr. Yamaguchi, who also saw the music video demo. He claimed that YUI's voice fascinated him to such an extent that he went to visit the studio himself. It also created a strong bond between its prime-time drama and YUI's debut theme. Yui also appeared in a film released in June 2006 called Taiyou no Uta (タイヨウのうた, "Song of the Sun"), which participated in the Cannes Film Festival. With the release of "Gloria" in 2010, YUI became the second singer/songwriter in seven years to have four consecutive singles ("Summer Song", "Again", "It's All Too Much"/"Never Say Die" and "Gloria") first on the Oricon, following in the footsteps of Utada Hikaru.
