[Politics] Ecuador calls for cooperation and integration to defend the Amazon

The president of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, called on Friday to redouble cooperation and articulate joint work between regional integration systems to defend the strategic biodiversity of the Amazon.

Lasso, during his virtual participation in the presidential summit of the Leticia Pact, held this Friday in that Colombian city, remarked that this region, considered a lung of the world, also concentrates 20% of the planet's fresh water.

 

For this reason, he stressed that the Leticia Pact "recognizes the strategic value of the Amazon for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity at a global level," according to statements made at the summit and which have been reproduced in Quito by his office .

This type of characteristics makes the Amazon a key regulator of the global climate system and is the habitat of more than 34 million people, including indigenous peoples and ancestral groups in voluntary isolation, he recalled.

The president emphasized the importance of joining forces for the conservation of this core point for the planet and recalled that the legislation of his country protects the rights of nature, promotes its protection and the sustainable use of biodiversity.

Lasso also insisted on his Government's goal of "becoming the fourth country in the world and the first in Latin America and the Caribbean to adopt the vision and transversal policy to initiate an ecological transition towards a circular, resilient and low-emission economy. ".

That initiative, he said, seeks to "create the conditions to generate and strengthen the professional and institutional capacities of countries."

 

In addition, the Ecuadorian president warned about the need to carry out actions such as transferring technology more efficiently, as well as achieving greater scientific cooperation to improve the use of biodiversity.

"The reduction or loss of species of flora and fauna knows no borders. That is why a true transformation of the current patterns of production and consumption is required, in order to guarantee the right of every human being to live in an environment without risks, clean, healthy and sustainable, "Lasso said.

He insisted on the need to "promote coordination and cooperation among the member countries of the Leticia Pact and other regional initiatives, including coordinated actions in border areas with high biodiversity."

"Only joint work will allow us to protect the Amazon, one of the most important ecological communities in the world and a source of life for the planet," added the president.
