Photo: FEF Clímaco Cañarte, Jorge Bolaños and Washington Muñoz are legendary names in Ecuadorian soccer. Between them, three wove the goal with which Ecuador achieved its only away victory against Colombia, by World Cup qualifiers, 56 years ago. Cañarte served for ‘Pibe’, who dodged the mark of three defenders, and put a pass in the alley for ‘Chanfle’ to execute a powerful shot -one of his calling cards- and break the resistance of the Colombian goalkeeper. With that single goal, the Tri achieved a milestone that has not been repeated since 1965 to date. This October 15, 2021, the Ecuadorian team will play again against their counterpart from Colombia, at the Roberto Meléndez stadium (Barranquilla), with the obligation to add to stay in the qualification zone for the Qatar World Cup 2022. La Tri adds 16 points and is third in the table, his opponent has one point less and occupies the fifth box. For the Colombians, this game has a flavor of revenge, after the last qualifying match against La Tri, when they were defeated 6-1, in Quito. It is the worst win that the coffee selected in the process towards Qatar. The history of confrontations in Colombia disadvantages the Tri. The 1965 victory is the only one registered by eliminatory, in nine confrontations; Furthermore, in these 56 years Ecuador only scored three goals when it visited coffee-growing territory.
