GM's Cruze Corporation has announced that it is targeting 1 million self-driving cars on the road by 2030.

Cruise CEO Dan Amann revealed the new plan during a big celebration for the company by displaying illustrations of the "exponential cruise fleet slope," CNBC reports.

“We expect the business to expand quickly,” Aman said, while the CEO did not elaborate on the 2030 deadline, but said, “This is where the company thinks it could be.”

Federal officials are still in the early stages of testing and certifying self-driving cars, which have proven to be a hurdle for Cruise.

The company tested self-driving cars in San Francisco several years ago, and plans to offer its autonomous taxi to customers as early as 2022, but it is awaiting approval from US authorities, according to CNBC.

California granted its fifth of the six cruise permits it will need to market its self-driving passenger car service.

A Google subsidiary, Waymo, has received similar permits, but will require cars to have backup drivers.

Cruise plans to send its products to markets around the world, as the company has already agreed with authorities in the UAE to be the exclusive producer of self-driving taxis in the country.

Cruise will cost approximately $5 per mile to operate the taxis, although the company expects that number to drop to approximately $1.50 per mile once the vehicles are fully driverless.
