Alfa Romeo is studying the possibility of replacing Giovinazzi next season, with a short list of potential drivers to partner up with Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas.

Alpine junior Guanyu Zhuo is a Formula 2 participant at the top of that list, but no decision has yet been made.

Giovinazzi reached the third qualifying round in two of the last three rounds, starting from seventh place in Zandvoort and Monza. But he failed to score points since 10th place in Monaco.

When asked by Motorsport.com if he was considering his options outside F1 for next season, Giovinazzi replied: "Frankly, now, I want to focus on my seat in the championship."

"Then, if the worst-case scenario happens, I will start thinking about what I will do next year."

"But I want to focus on my work here in Formula One, to try to keep my seat."

Giovinazzi does not know when the decision will be taken by the team, indicating that this question is not within his powers, but rather from Frederic Vasseur, the team's manager.

"The only thing I can do is drive and score more points and hopefully that's enough," he said.

Giovinazzi made his F1 debut with Sauber in 2017, replacing then-injured Pascal Wehrlein during the first two rounds of the season.

The Italian later returned to the team to participate since the beginning of the 2019 season, with the support of Ferrari.

But Ferrari no longer has an influence on the second seat with Alfa Romeo, as Mattia Binotto, the team principal at Monza, indicated.

Commenting on the possibility of replacing him with one of Ferrari's young drivers for next season, Binotto explained that this issue has not yet been discussed.

"I think first of all, of course, we should try to keep him in F1," he said.

"That's what we're totally focused on right now," he concluded.
