(Reuters) - Andrei Rublev and Alexander Zverev gifted Team Europe the Laver Cup title with a 6-2, 6-7, 10-3 win over Team World duo Riley Obelka and Denis Shapovalov in Boston on Sunday.

 

Team Europe entered the final day of the tournament and needed to win one of four matches to secure the title and wasted no time to consolidate its 14-1 advantage, an irreplaceable difference.

 

"At the end of the day it was 14-1 but it could have been different a lot of times," Zverev said in an on-court interview.

 

"We put in a lot of effort to win throughout the tournament, this group within the team is amazing and I think a lot of the players got closer and I can't wait to get back to the tournament in London next year."

 

Each victory counts with one point on Friday, two points on Saturday and three points on Sunday, and the first team to collect 13 points becomes the champion of the tournament.

The world team needed to win all four matches on the final day to win the title, but Opelka and Shapovalov accomplished the task after excelling in a second set.

 

Team Europe won the first four editions of the three-day tournament named after Australian legend Rod Laver.
