Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) - Officials at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Monday that there is no evidence that animals play a major role in the spread of the Corona virus among humans. However, some precautions can help keep people and their pets safe.

"Based on the limited information available to date, the risk of transmission of COVID-19 from animals to humans, including pets, is considered low," Dr. Casey Barton Behravish, a CDC official, explained during Monday's briefing.

Evidence suggests that COVID-19 likely originated in animals before spreading to humans.

"As of mid-January, we have learned that 187 animals in 22 countries have been infected with SARS-CoV-2," Behravish said, noting that "these numbers do not include mink farms."

Behravish added that no animal deaths have so far been linked to the virus.

Behravish said her companion animals, especially cats and dogs, are the leading group among animal species affected by the coronavirus.

Although the risks of animal-to-human transmission are low, people can transmit the Corona virus to pets, Behravish explained.

The US Centers for Disease Control recommends that all people treat pets the same way they treat family members to protect them from infection with “Covid-19”.

The agency advises keeping cats indoors and preventing other pets from roaming freely. She pointed out the importance of not putting masks on the faces of pets, because they may cause them harm.

And infected people should avoid contact with pets, which means no kissing or sleeping in the same bed, the CDC says.

Thus, it is important that someone else take over the responsibility of caring for the pet. If this is not possible, the CDC advises wearing a face mask when handling it.

People who suspect their pets have contracted the coronavirus should consult a veterinarian.

Behravish noted that of the 93 cases of "Covid-19" in cats and dogs in the United States, 53% of them did not show any symptoms.

Behravesh said pets that have tested positive for coronavirus should be isolated from humans and other animals.

She added that there is no evidence that pets carry the Corona virus on their skin or hair, and it is also important not to wipe them or wash them with chemical disinfectants.

Behravish indicated that the US Food and Drug Administration has not approved any special drugs to treat or prevent animals from "Covid-19".
