The Shining Path terrorist leader, Abimael Guzmán Reynoso died at the age of 86. He was being held serving a life sentence as he was responsible for the death of more than 30,000 Peruvians, including civilians, police and military, as determined by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

Abimael Guzmán was imprisoned in the Maximum Security Detention Center of the Callao Naval Base. Precisely this center reported, through the National Penitentiary Institute (INPE), that the death of the terrorist occurred at around 6:40 a.m. of this Saturday, September 11 due to complications in his health.

 

"The head of that detention center made the technical committee of Cerec aware of this fact, and as appropriate it has been communicated to the Public Ministry for the legal proceedings," a statement read.

The death of Abimael Guzmán occurs on the eve of the 29th anniversary of his historic capture, which occurred on September 12, 1992 in a house in the Surquillo district, thanks to the work of a team led by the Special Intelligence Group (GEIN) , of the Directorate against Terrorism of the National Police of Peru.

A few days after his capture, the Shining Path leader was presented to the Peruvian and foreign media wearing a striped suit with the number 1509 and inside a large cage.

Despite his status as a detainee, the terrorist did not miss the opportunity to shout harangues in favor of the subversive group and against the government of that time, led by the former president - today imprisoned for crimes against humanity - Alberto Fujimori.

Complications in your health
Abimael Guzmán was transferred on July 20 from his detention center at the Naval Base to a nearby hospital due to problems in his health. In a statement, Cerec detailed that Guzmán was subjected, on July 19, to a new medical examination specialized in geriatrics by the personnel of the Ministry of Health (Minsa). He had been treated days ago for presenting “recurrent loss of appetite” and “low blood pressure”.

The Shining Path leader refused to be transferred again to a medical center, even though the results of his previously performed laboratory tests concluded that he needed specialized medical attention. However, after talking with his defense attorney, the inmate was transferred voluntarily in a SAMU ambulance to a hospital near Cerec, where he received medical attention.

Statement from the Public Ministry
The Public Ministry, Callao Fiscal District, reported that it was notified of the death of Abimael Guzmán Reynoso at 8:00 am this Saturday, September 11, through a telephone communication made by the custody personnel of the Callao Naval Base .

Prosecutors from the Callao Third Provincial Criminal Prosecutor's Office went to the military compound to remove the body and carry out the legal proceedings to determine the cause of the death of the terrorist leader.

“The Public Ministry informs that, once the fiscal proceedings at the Callao Naval Base have concluded, the body of the deceased will be transferred to the Callao Central Morgue, where the legal autopsy will be performed, as well as the anthropological examination, forensic dentistry, biology and DNA, ”reported the MP.

Finally, he indicated that he has arranged the intervention of a multidisciplinary team of forensic doctors and experts from the Callao Central Morgue, with the support of the Lima Central Morgue, to carry out the aforementioned necropsy and examinations.
