The deputy Catalina Pérez (RD) argued that “the mistreatment suffered by animals in the rodeo cannot continue to be justified under the slogan of sport or tradition.” The initiative has the support of more than 182 thousand signatures collected on the change platform .org.

During the morning of this Wednesday, Deputy Catalina Pérez (RD), with the support of other parliamentarians and the Animal Libre organization, presented a bill that seeks to give powers to municipalities so that they can restrict rodeo activities in their communes , through municipal ordinances.

"The mistreatment suffered by animals in the rodeo can no longer be justified under the slogan of sport or tradition, a competition based on who gives the most blows to an animal," said the parliamentarian.

In addition, Pérez emphasized that in the new Chile an ethical redefinition is needed in our relationship with animals.

"We must reject all practices that generate suffering, submission and abuse," he said.

For her part, the president of Animal Libre in Chile, Daniela Miranda, indicated that the project represents "an important advance in order to stop rodeo activities".

 

 

“They generate a prejudice towards the steers and horses that are used and abused in this tradition. More than ten years ago we began to question this practice and we will not stop until its abolition, ”he explained.

The animal rights organization assures that investigations and audiovisual records have evidenced direct acts of animal abuse, such as slapping, kicking, use of electric batons and other blows that end with bloodied animals in the performance of the activity.

The initiative has the support of more than 182 thousand signatures collected on the change.org platform, who ask that the rodeo cease to be considered a sporting activity.
