Pineapple is one of the most appreciated fruits in gastronomy. It comes from a plant that only bears fruit once every three years, offering a single sweet fruit that is used as a dessert or to integrate in numerous cooking recipes.

In addition, this fruit has been associated with diets, but the truth is that it is a suitable food to eat mid-morning, or during a mid-afternoon snack for a snack, and even as a dessert. Thanks to its origin, you can find pineapple on the market throughout the year.

First of all, you have to know that pineapple is a fruit that only matures satisfactorily on the plant, something that directly influences its composition, since its content of sugar and active ingredients doubles in the last weeks of ripening. In fact, the fruits that are picked prematurely are acidic and contain hardly any nutrients.

Nutrients and other components include iodine, vitamin C, organic acids, and bromelain. For example, if it has matured correctly, it contains around 11% carbohydrates, although with 86% water, offering an energy intake of 50 calories per 100 grams of edible product.

On the other hand, pineapple stands out for being a rich source of vitamin C, a vitamin that contributes to the protection of cells against oxidative damage, that is, it has a great antioxidant power. Specifically, it provides 20 mg of this per 100 grams of edible product.

It is also a source of iodine, a mineral that contributes to normal energy metabolism and thyroid production, adding to normal thyroid function. Iodine is present in an amount of 30 mg per 100 grams. It still has more potassium, with 250 mg for the same amount.

To these benefits, the nutritionist Stephania Esparza adds that this fruit has bromelain enzyme, which is a good element for digestion, when, for example, pineapple is eaten for dessert –after having eaten protein. Finally, she highlights that the recommended amount is 3/4 cup, and that in some cases she can be allergic; check with your GP before regular intake.
