كانت المفاوضات بين الطرفين عسيرة

In the coming days, Barcelona will officially announce the renewal of the contract of Argentine star Lionel Messi.
The Spanish newspaper "Marca" said that Messi will remain linked to the club for the next five years, with his salary being reduced in half, along with a penalty clause of 350 million euros.

The newspaper stated that the negotiations were difficult, noting that some parts of the contract required a long time to agree on them, while some items were resolved "within seconds."

salary reduction

Messi will get half the salary he was getting under his previous contract. The player accepted the offer immediately, as he was aware of the difficult period the club is going through. Messi has always stressed that money is not an obstacle to the deal.

Duration of the contract

This was the most complicated part during the negotiations, as the club put forward many proposals, in the past months, with talk of 10 years, two years, or even a renewable contract every year. But everything was rejected.

"It now remains to be seen whether the Argentine will spend the full five years, or if he will move to the American League after two seasons," Marca said.

taxes

This point was non-negotiable for Messi, according to the Spanish newspaper, as the Argentine player stressed that any agreed payments should be "legal".

For this reason, Barcelona has worked closely with the tax authorities to ensure the legality of the payments. After receiving the green light, the player agreed.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta wanted the deal to be completed as quickly as possible, as many sponsors were waiting for Messi's contract renewal.

The newspaper stated that "the presence of the best player in the world in the team naturally affects the decisions of sponsors and major companies."

deferred payments

This was also a complicated issue during the negotiations. Messi owed around €80m, either due to defaults or delayed payments from other seasons.

Messi's advisors wanted to know what would happen with the "pending payments", whether they would be disbursed or added to the new contract. It is not yet known how this point was resolved.
