Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross 2017

End of an era or start of a new one? A few months after its merger with the Renault-Nissan Alliance, Mitsubishi unveils its first new car (excluding pick-up) in five years. The Eclipse Cross is a 4.40-meter compact SUV that hopes to compare to Volkswagen Tiguan, Seat Ateca, Peugeot 3008 and other Nissan Qashqai, plus the 4×4 house genetic heritage. Placed in a segment as growing as it is competitive (there were about thirty rivals), this vehicle is probably the last designed 100% by the diamond brand. It also takes the platform - and wheelbase - of its range brothers, the ASX (4.30m) and Outlander (4.70m).

On the design side, there is undoubtedly something new. Tsunehiro Kunimoto (father of the Nissan Juke and the Nissan Skyline R32) took out the billhook and designed an SUV with sharp lines. From 3/4 face, the search for angles is undoubtedly successful. On the other hand, following another Eclipse Cross, the impression is less good: despite the split rear window, the machine seems perched high on its narrow wheels ...

A well thought out interior

The interior is much more classic. No virtual instrumentation or spectacular "piano" keys like its Euro-rivals, but rather neat ergonomics. The driving position is typical SUV, so high, favoring the impression of space but unusual if you are considering the purchase of a first vehicle in this class. The steering wheel is adjustable in height and depth. We thus note a head-up display (on the highest finishes) much more readable than elsewhere. The finish is in progress compared to the ASX and Outlander, although there are a few buttons that are not pretty. The eye is satisfied by the appearance of shiny surfaces and the hand by the foamy plastics lining the dashboard. Surprisingly, this somewhat dull coating is less pretty than it is pleasant to the touch.

Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross: el Eclipse ahora es un SUV que se pasa al 'downsizing' y al turbo

Speaking of which, the dashboard is dominated by a 7-inch interactive screen that is controlled by a "touchpad" (a touchpad, like on laptops) that is intuitive to use. The brand has all the same made a curious choice: the GPS will not appear on the most chic finish. Mitsubishi believes that its customers will always prefer a smartphone and an app like Waze, rather than a traditional in-car system. Why not… Logically, the presence of the Apple Car Play and Android Auto systems compensate for the absence of the world map.

On the other hand, the Eclipse Cross is not stingy when it comes to space. The rear passengers are well treated in the shoulders as in the legs. Better still, the rear seat slides 20 cm, allowing you to choose between comfort and the size of the trunk. The volume of the latter is unfortunately a little tight: between 341 and 448 liters. The Peugeot 3008 offers a minimum of 520 liters.
