The po[CENSORED]r battle royale game PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds is apparently getting a sequel, as several leakers claim.

According to a report by TechRadar, the rumored sequel to the massively po[CENSORED]r online battle royale game is currently in development at Krafton. Numerous leaks have been pointing to the existence of PUBG 2, though a few of the rumors originally seemed to suggest that it's not going to be a battle royale title like its predecessor.

As Indians had to confine themselves to their homes due to the Coronavirus, many have turned to online games leading to a spike in app downloads and usage. Most of the details come from a series of tweets by a user with the handle PlayerIGN (not related to the gaming website of the same name), reports PCGamesN. According to the leaker, PUBG 2 is likely to be released next year, though no date was mentioned.

These bits of information seem to coincide with the upcoming release of another Krafton game, PUBG: New State, which is a mobile-only title currently in pre-registration mode on the Google Play store.

(Almost) Everyone Will Have a Crack at it
PlayerIGN also reveals that "PUBG 2" supports cross-play, which means that both PC and console gamers will get to play together without any platform restrictions, reports GFinityEsports. If this info is true, then PC players can invite their console-playing friends to try and compete against each other for that coveted Chicken Dinner.

The release, however, is likely to be current-gen only, meaning only PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC gamers will be able to play. One can assume that Krafton, one of the main proponents of the battle royale game genre during this console generation, is also planning to release the game on last-gen Xbox One and PS4. There's no word on a possible Nintendo Switch release yet.

As for a mobile release, Krafton will possibly put out a sequel for PUBG Mobile, which despite being banned in India is still one of the most po[CENSORED]r games on Android and iOS.

A Battle Royale Game Renaissance
If you look around Steam or any other online game store, you'll tend to find a battle royale game in the "most po[CENSORED]r" list these days. And frankly, this is due to the first steps taken by a few game modders back in 2013.

That was the year that DayZ, a survival game that Digital Trends cites as among the first ones to tease the commercial and competitive potential of a battle royale game, released. Originally starting as a multiplayer mod for Arma 2, DayZ was one of the first to put players in a wide space where they have to forage for gear, all while competing with other players for said gear.

As a result, the battle royale game genre was born, and boy, did it blow up. Following in the successful footsteps of PUBG, games such as Fortnite and Rules of Survival saw their share of massive player bases. Even the long-time AAA series Call of Duty joined in on the fray with their free-to-play title called Warzone, which is even making fans of long-time PUBG streamers like Dr. Disrespect, among others.
