Cruz Azul is one victory away from reaching 40 points in the Guardians 2021 and, with it, joining the select group that have managed to add this number of units or more in the history of short tournaments.

With its tie against America, the Machine reached 37 points, with two games to go before the regular phase of the tournament ends. The largest number of units the cement squad could reach would be 43.

Since the short tournaments were established in Mexico, only eight teams have managed to reach 40 points or more in the regular phase.

According to this same statistic, there is a 50 percent probability that Cruz Azul can break the hex and be champion in this Guardians 2021.

And it is that of these eight teams that managed to add 40 or more points in a short tournament, four ended up being champions.

THOSE WHO WERE CHAMPIONS

In Summer 2000, Toluca finished the season with 40 points. He reached the final of this tournament, where he smashed Santos Laguna with a 7-1 aggregate to lift the title.

In the Apertura 2002, again the Red Devils culminated as general leaders adding 41 points. They were fighting obstacles in the league, until they reached the final, where they defeated Morelia 4-2 on aggregate.

Pumas, in the Clausura 2004, added 41 points and reached the final. The university students were champions defeating Chivas on penalties after a tie on aggregate to one goal.

Finally, León reached 40 points in the 2020 Guardians and crowned his excellent campaign by defeating Pumas in the final.

THOSE WHO STAYED ON THE SHORE

Cruz Azul himself, in Winter 98, registered 40 points, but was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Pumas.

América, in the Apertura 2002, added what so far is the most points in a short tournament with 43. However, they were quickly eliminated in the league by Santos.

In the Clausura 2004, Jaguares surprised and was super leader with 42 points, but in the quarterfinals he was thrown by Cruz Azul.

Finally, in the Clausura 2009, León swept and added 41 units, reached the final, but there he was defeated by Tigres.
