undai Motor has revealed more details of the new KONA N. The company's first performance SUV will be available with an eight-speed wet dual-clutch transmission, known as the N DCT, which offers high-level performance to ensure a smooth ride. even more fun.

The N DCT is the upgraded version of the company-developed 8DCT transmission, an eight-speed wet-type dual-clutch transmission. To accommodate the N models, the 8DCT transmission has received durability enhancements, allowing it to cope with the demands of high-performance cars. With the 2.0 T-GDI engine, it offers the best performance, applying transmission ratios without competition. The control unit on this transmission is specially calibrated, which translates into quicker shifts. In addition, it allows a series of exclusive driving functions.

Hyundai's N DCT technology was first offered on the VELOSTER N, a model available in North America and Korea, and arrived in the New i30 N as a result of valuable feedback from the Hyundai's N community. In the case of the New KONA N, it is specified as standard with the N DCT transmission.

The wet-type DCT transmission is structurally similar to a manual transmission, making it equally efficient in power delivery and shift response. Unlike a dry type gearbox, the wet type DCT uses two electric oil pumps to reduce the amount of friction between moving parts and for better cooling of the clutch, thus allowing greater transfer of torque through the the gearbox.

The electric pump system consists of a high-flow electric oil pump, which is responsible for lubricating the gears and cooling the clutch, and a high-pressure electric oil pump, which supplies oil to the accumulator and maintains the pressure needed to control gear shifting. Together, they ensure that this wet DCT can operate with minimal loss of engine power, which translates into increased fuel economy at the same time. This new and updated pumping system increases the number of applications for the wet N DCT transmission, making it optimal for high torque vehicle applications. The benefits are twofold: this system results in better performance by increasing the maximum allowable torque, and at the same time, the vehicle is more fun to drive due to the higher efficiency in power transmission and acceleration performance.

In addition to higher performance, the use of the N DCT also improves driving dynamics. The cooling oil constantly keeps the clutch at the optimum operating temperature, preventing overheating during high-performance driving when we push the car to the limit of its possibilities. However, even on congested roads or on steep slopes, situations where the transmission is put under greater stress, the N DCT ensures smooth and stable operation.

The N DCT enables the development of exclusive high-performance functions that are sure to put a smile on the driver's face: N Power Shift, N Grin Shifty, N Track Sense Shift. These functions enhance the car's capabilities through specific logical shift management.

The N Power Shift (NPS) system kicks in when the car accelerates with more than 90% of the throttle, mitigating any reduction in torque during upshifts to transmit maximum power to the wheels. This increases driving pleasure by offering a “push feel” when shifting up gear. The popping sound from the exhaust underscores the performance
The N Grin Shift System (NGS) maximizes motor performance and DCT for 20 seconds. To obtain maximum acceleration, the car reduces directly to the most suitable gear. To activate it, the driver only has to press a specific button located on the steering wheel. A countdown then begins in the instrument cluster showing the seconds remaining for this function. Once the boost or overpressure is finished, the driver must wait at least 40 seconds to use it again. This function allows the driver to squeeze the full potential of the car with a single button, for example when pursuing the best lap time. It can also be an advantage when overtaking or merging onto a highway.
