At first, the agents of the Nature Protection Service (Seprona) of the Civil Guard who investigated the case believed that it could be an accident caused by a rattlesnake abandoned in the wild (in an area so unsuitable for this species as the municipality of La Puebla de Montalbán (Toledo), but after several inquiries they have been able to clarify some of the details of the event.

The Civil Guard is now investigating the 31-year-old man who was bitten by a rattlesnake for "a crime of animal abuse, another related to the protection of flora, fauna and domestic animals, and a third against collective security" after having discovered that he is in possession of more than 40 snakes, most of them highly poisonous and lethal, as reported by Seprona.

The 112 Emergency Service of Castilla-La Mancha received a call on Saturday, February 28, that a man claimed to have suffered a bite by a rattlesnake when he was walking through a field in La Puebla de Montalbán (Toledo). After a first medical attention, the affected person was finally admitted to the "Virgen de la Salud" Hospital in Toledo.

The police officers began a search device to find the snake that, according to the victim, was a rattlesnake, an exotic species with a very lethal poison, which on Sunday 28 was found dead at kilometer 31 of the CM-4009 highway. within the municipality of La Puebla de Montalbán, after being crushed by a vehicle.

The Nature Protection Service (Seprona) of the Toledo Civil Guard took charge of the lifeless body of the animal and began investigations to determine its origin and the possible criminal or administrative responsibility of its owner.

After the appropriate inquiries, it was found that the man who suffered the snake bite was fond of collecting exotic animals on the farm of his residence located in Val de Santo Domingo.

The facts were brought to the attention of the judicial authority, in this case the Torrijos Guard Court, to request an entry and registration in the home of the now being investigated and verify the state and care of the animals, their legitimate ownership and the specific danger existing for both people and the environment in case any of them escape.

With the authorization of entry and registration, Seprona troops, with the collaboration of the Santa Olalla Firefighters, accessed the farm this Friday and in an annex to the house, in a building used as a museum, with permanent air conditioning use to ensure the ideal heat temperature always above 20 degrees, it was found that the researched harbored numerous snakes and scorpions in their corresponding terrariums.

With the help of several specialists in the management of dangerous exotic animals, they were able to identify by means of a chip installation and to correctly catalog the more than 30 species of reptiles present, up to 45 snakes among vipers, cobras -one royal- and mambas -two green- , plus a boa constrictor.

Along with the reptiles there were also 12 scorpions and various material for their feeding and care, such as a freezer chest full of mice and small animals.

By not providing documentation proving their legitimate origin and authorization for the possession of these exotic and highly poisonous animals, the Seprona proceeded to their immediate apprehension, in total 44 very toxic snakes and 12 lethal scorpions, finding a dead reptile.
