The health authorities of the United Kingdom warned in their day of the detection of a new inflammatory disease that affects children of all ages and could be related to the disease that causes the new coronavirus. This pathology, these sources added, has a more serious epidemiology than Covid-19 and shares symptoms of pediatric shock and Kawasaki disease. Recently, the World Health Organization (WHO) gave a name to the ailment that affected children who had passed the coronavirus: pediatric multisystemic inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C) and, in addition, we learned about the case of a child in Lugo who had to be admitted to the ICU with a 'toxic shock' linked to the coronavirus.

Thus, the WHO considered anecdotal the registered cases of children with severe pediatric shocks after contracting covid-19. "Inflammatory syndromes similar to Kawasaki syndrome have been reported in some cases, but in very few patients and only in a couple of countries," the Organization noted.

For its part, the Spanish Association of Pediatrics (AEP), in a note on cases of pediatric shock, has called for calm to families and has ensured that pediatricians are alerted to this circumstance. "Cases of shock in children that are temporarily coinciding with the covid-19 epidemic are very rare," add pediatricians, while the Spanish Heart Foundation (FEC) reports on its website that Kawasaki disease is a vasculitis that It produces a generalized inflammation of the arteries of the body and usually appears in children under five years of age.

Its most feared complication is the appearance of coronary aneurysms that occur in up to 20% of cases if the appropriate treatment is not administered. It is a rare disease with an incidence of 90 cases per 100,000 children in Japan, and in Europe much lower, 30 or 40. It is one of the main causes of acquired heart disease in children in developed countries.

The FEC adds that the cause of Kawasaki disease is unknown, but it is suspected that there may be a genetic component that determines an excessive immune reaction after an infection by an agent that is also not known, but may probably be a virus.
