Carlos firefighters responded to a fire at Skip’s Deluxe Auto Parts Saturday afternoon, March 27.

At about 2:45 p.m., the Douglas County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call from Jay Eckel, 54, of Eagle Bend who saw a large amount of smoke coming from the auto parts business at 4733 County Road 13 NE in Carlos.

While deputies were responding, they learned there was someone inside who was actively trying to put out the fire.

When the Carlos Fire Department arrived, the fire was mostly contained and was extinguished by firefighters.

An Alexandria man and his 13-year-old son were inside when the fire started and were checked out by North Ambulance for smoke inhalation and were released at the scene.

The sheriff’s office said it appears that a small amount of gasoline was spilled on the floor and was ignited when a hammer was dropped on the ground and sparked.

Some miscellaneous small items were burned in the immediate area, and there was damage to the garage doors and the side of the building, according to authorities.

There was also smoke damage in the building.

Responding to the scene was the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Carlos Fire Department and North Ambulance.
