The new BMW M 1000 RR brings exclusive racing technology to off-road roads. Building on the S 1000 RR, BMW is putting a further gear on the supesport concept.

If the BMW S 1000 RR was already one of the models located at the most radical extreme of the representatives of the superbike segment, now the German brand goes a step further with the first motorcycle of its superb M iconography. This emblem has historically symbolized its sportier cars, an area in which it should not be forgotten that BMW has officially participated in all the top international level championships, including Formula 1.

This "ultra-racing" scheme was already experienced in 2018 with the launch by the BMW motorcycle section of a catalog of optional M equipment with absolutely special parts. But now the final icing is put with a BMW M 1000 RR that commits itself to the most extreme performance and the most exclusive technology of its two-wheel range. Aerodynamic spoilers, carbon rims and a renewed engine to its last corners, among many other details, attest to this.

In this vein, the maximum power is the highest ever achieved by a series BMW, with 212 hp for a declared weight of just 192 kg (207 hp for 193.5 kg in the S 1000 RR). To put a close reference, the last superbike to appear on the market, the Honda CBR 1000 RR-R, exhibits 218 hp of maximum power for 202 kg of weight (201 kg in the SP version). In this way, the power / weight ratio of the German exceeds the Japanese (1.10 hp / kg and 1.08 hp / kg, respectively).

The technical characteristics of its engine derive from the development present in the S 1000 RR used in the World Superbikes in the hands of Tom Sykes and Eugene Laverty. Therefore they include the ShiftCam variable distribution system, as in the S 1000 RR, with an action up to a maximum speed of 9,000 rpm. Its maximum power regime is estimated at 14,500 rpm (in the S 1000 RR at 13,500 rpm), with a maximum torque of 113 Nm at 11,000 rpm. Ignition cut-off is reached at 15,100 rpm, 500 rpm higher than on the S 1000 RR.

Inside we find forged aluminum pistons manufactured by the prestigious Mahle double segment and 12 gr lighter, redesigned combustion chambers with titanium valves and longer and 85 gr lighter titanium connecting rods by Pankl, as well as rocker arms. thinner and 6% lighter, and machined intake ports and camshafts plus the entire intake area with shorter intakes. The compression ratio is increased to 13.5: 1 (13.3: 1 on the S). The brand guarantees more power from this new M RR engine between 6,100 rpm and 9,500 rpm, which presents in its lower band a very useful range on the open road. Up to 6,100 rpm, however, the response of the S 1000 RR is more forceful, a small sacrifice made to make the M 1000 RR much more lively at high revs. Also new is the Akrapovic exhaust system, 3.657 grams lighter, with titanium manifold and silencer.

BMW is very proud of the work done on the aerodynamics of their new M 1000 RR. The development of its ailerons has not only focused on obtaining superior maximum speed records, but also on the control of the front wheel during strong accelerations. They have been developed in the BMW Group wind tunnel and are made of transparent carbon fiber. Its effect is also noticeable in curves and braking due to the downforce they transmit, which translates into superior stability and the possibility of delaying braking.

In the cycle part, the chassis exhibits new heights of geometries and has undergone a different weight distribution than the S 1000 RR. It allows the adjustment of the pivot point of the swingarm to adapt to the needs of each circuit, for the slowest or the fastest. The aluminum double-beam scheme of the S 1000 RR is maintained, but its components have evolved the Marzocchi inverted fork and the shock absorber mount, the latter with a new link system called Full Floater Pro, a term that reminds us to the first Suzuki monoshock systems from decades ago.

The brake system is another area of exclusive components in the history of BMW motorcycles. For the first time, M brakes and carbon wheels are used as standard. These brakes reflect the experience of the brand in the World Superbike. They feature a blue anodized external coating combined with the M logo.

The instrumentation uses a 6.5-inch TFT screen that allows the use of the M GPS telemetry system and the M GPS portable data transmission system, as used by Sykes and Laverty at WSBK. Accommodates "Rain", "Road", "Dynamic", "Race" and "Race Pro 1-3" driving modes, as well as the latest generation of Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) and DTC anti-wheelie function with box of 6-axis sensors.

Electronic technology is completed by two adjustable throttle curves for optimal response and triple regulation of the engine brake. It has Shift Assistant Pro to raise and lower gears without clutch, as well as a simple system to reverse the direction of the gear lever for use on the track, as well as Launch Control output control and Pit-Lane-Limiter speed limiter. For off-piste use, Hill Start Control Pro facilitates hill starting electronic adaptive cruise control, USB charging socket, LED lights and heated grips.

To complete the ensemble, its decoration elevates the M color scheme based on the combination of light white, red and dark blue to the maximum expression. The engine covers are finished in granite gray and the gas cap in black.

But the BMW M 1000 RR proposal goes even further if it accommodates the M competition package. In addition to the M GPS portable transponder software and the corresponding activation code, the M competition package also includes the M milled parts package, the package made of M carbon, as well as a 220 gram lighter silver swingarm, friction-optimized DLC-coated M Endurance chain and maintenance-free. A passenger seat cover is also added.

Rudi Schneider, S and K Model Series Director: "With the M RR we are introducing the first BMW Motorrad M model. Based on the current S 1000 RR, the characteristics of the M 1000 RR are ultra sporty and have been aligned with the needs of the most radical customers and the WSBK. "This can be clearly seen in their lap times from 2021."

Stephan Loistl, General M Vehicle Development: "Our standard Double R is a benchmark of real superiority, both in close-to-series motorcycle races and on the road. With the M RR we have managed to level up in every section. lighter and faster, and exclusively developed to deliver the performance, which you can feel from the first meter. Considering what this new product offers and its extremely short development time, I still can't believe it. "

Martin Keck, M 1000 RR Chassis Development: "Close cooperation with the M Sport department and geometries based on the current WSBK bike have resulted in a significant increase in track performance. Optimized brake calipers for competition contribute significantly to this. They are particularly characterized by their excellent stability and resistance, and the rapid rear wheel change. "
