In addition to the return of rear-wheel drive, the introduction of the ST version stands out.

2021 Ford Explorer is updated
Ford Explorer 2020 se actualiza
The Ford Explorer is an iconic model not only for the signature of the blue oval, but for the American industry in general. This is because when the first generation appeared there in 1990 it raised the standards of quality, practicality and comfort of SUVs to a higher level than usual. In addition, he had his moment of cinematic glory in Jurassic Park (1993).

Well, since then this SUV has continued its evolution and although it has had dark moments in its history such as that massive recall caused by the controversial issue of Firestone tires, in reality it is a highly successful model and loved by the public. Not for nothing have more than 7.7 million units been sold since its introduction.

The best proof is that the sixth generation of this SUV was released at the 2019 Detroit Motor Show, which is starting its commercial career in the Mexican market. This new iteration has several peculiarities that somehow separate it from the competition and return it to its historical legacy.

For starters, it's built on the CD6 platform, debuted on the Lincoln Aviator, and with it the Explorer returns to rear-wheel drive. Characteristic that has been present in five of its six generations. Only, instead of being derived from a pickup, it is a last batch modular platform, with a more dynamic profile and that will be used in various Ford models. But we already talked about it at the time of its international launch.

In our market, at least initially, the new Explorer 2020 is available with two different engines. The base drive, which will power most versions, is a 2.3-liter Ecoboost four-cylinder capable of delivering 300 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. The transmission is a 10-speed automatic.

But the big surprise comes from the Explorer ST, sporting aspirations thanks to the fact that under the hood sits a 3.0-liter Ecoboost six-cylinder with 400 HP and 415 pound-feet of torque. This power is more than enough to announce a top speed of 230 km / h. In this case it is an AWD.

In terms of equipment, the new Ford Explorer has some highlights such as the 8-inch touch screen, compatible with Applink, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which also projects the images from the reverse camera as part of the Active Parking Assistance System . In the Limited version, it has a wireless charger, as well as a 12-speaker B&O premium audio system.

In terms of safety, the Ford Explorer 2020 has the set of Ford Co-Pilot360 technologies that brings together Pre-Collision Assistance with Automatic Emergency Brake (with Pedestrian Detection), Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go and Central Maintenance of Lane, BLIS Blind Spot Monitoring with Cross Traffic Alert and more.

The 2020 Ford Explorer is already announced on the firm's page in Mexico, but its prices and versions will be announced in a few days. By profile, its most direct rival would be the Dodge Durango, but we must also count Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot, Chevrolet Traverse and company.
