Last Wednesday the European Medicines Agency announced that the preliminary investigation carried out in Austria on the departure of AstraZeneca that could be related to the death of a nurse and the serious situation of a second patient had concluded that there was no relationship between the vaccines and both cases. "There is currently no indication that vaccination caused these conditions, which are not classified as side effects," they said in their statement.

The 49-year-old nurse died after suffering severe blood circulation problems and another woman had to be hospitalized with a pulmonary embolism shortly after receiving the vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford.

For all these reasons, the Austrian health authorities have withdrawn the batch of vaccines from which both women received doses and which has been distributed among 17 countries.

Denmark was the first country to decide to follow in Austria's footsteps. The Danish General Directorate of Health decided last Thursday, March 11, to suspend vaccination with the AstraZeneca doses for at least 14 days. According to this body, there have been "serious cases of thrombi", one of which ended with the death of the patient.

Italy has also recalled the AstraZeneca ABV5300 vaccine batch after a 43-year-old military man and a 50-year-old police officer died in Sicily shortly after receiving the first dose of the British coronavirus vaccine.

These countries have been followed by Norway, Iceland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg and Romania

On the other hand, the Netherlands also registered last Thursday a case of thrombosis in a patient who had recently received the AstraZeneca vaccine, but it is not a serious case that has required hospitalization. However, the Dutch center that registers the secondary effects, Lareb, is investigating it.

The withdrawal of batch ABV5300 from AstraZeneca has coincided with the decision of the Public Health Commission to vaccinate citizens between 56 and 60 years old, as requested by various autonomous communities, such as Madrid and Catalonia, and different scientific societies and medical colleges. In this way, the health authorities have decided to wait for the European Medicines Agency to issue a report on whether the vaccine is related to some thrombotic cases referred by different countries belonging to the European Union.

Other countries that also received the batch under investigation are Poland, Malta, France and Greece.
