Magí Serra, durante su etapa como entrenador del Cangas /

Handball Sassari announced on Monday the signing of Spanish Magí Serra to lead his Italian Division 1 team until the end of the season. The Catalan coach was training at Terrasa de Primera Nacional, but an irrefutable offer from the transalpine club was enough to convince him and thus embark on a new path in his sports career with only 39 years old.

"I received a call from this club in case I was interested in their offer. They convinced me of their conditions and we balanced everything to close the agreement despite having other Spanish technicians among the candidates," explains the coach to Marca.com, who faces a lot illusion this new stage abroad. "I am very motivated because it is an ambitious project for a serious club, which is growing a lot," adds the native of Barcelona.

Currently second in the table in the Italian league three points behind the leader, the incorporation of Serra is presented as a necessary element for the growth of a Sassari that the same coach, Luigi Passino, has had for the last 16 years. "We have chosen a high-level profile to carry out a valid and growing project. After the dismissal of Passino, an experienced technician, we could not afford to bet. We firmly believe that Serra's choice is the best of all", says sports director Andrea Giordo.

"It attracts me a lot to be able to fight to finish as high as possible in the classification. In addition, this season he played the European Cup, all a double motivation to be used to fighting for permanence"

Fighting for titles and playing in Europe have been some of the reasons for the Spanish coach, used to fighting to avoid relegation in his previous teams. "It attracts me a lot to be able to fight to finish as high as possible in the classification. In addition, this season he played the European Cup, all a double motivation to be used to fighting for permanence," says Magí about the objectives of the Italian team, who played for the first time in its history an international competition.

Incorporations last summer such as that of the experienced Argentine international right back Fede Vieyra, respond to a sports project that seeks the first national title for its showcases after finishing fourth in the league last season. "Every coach likes to have the opportunity to win things," concludes Serra, who travels this Tuesday to sign until June of this year, but with the option to renew one more season.

Fourth club abroad
A new adventure in your history for a technician with experience abroad. Because the young coach will face his fourth stage in a foreign club after leading the Hungarian Szese Gyor and Balmazujváros, and the Kuwaiti Kazma. The lack of convincing projects in Spain once again propitiated his national handball march, where he left his mark on Pozoblanco, Villa de Aranda and Cangas, his last team, with which he achieved salvation in the Asobal League in the 2017/18 and 2018/19 courses. Since then, he has continued to train with some of the best coaches in the world while waiting for another opportunity.
