The Washington Apple Commission, an organization dedicated to promoting the consumption of Washington apples in export markets since 1937, announced that from now on two new varieties of apples will be found in the Colombian market to satisfy the growing appetite for this fruit in the country.

This is the Golden Delicious, a variety native to the US state of West Virginia in 1914, it is a crisp apple with a tender yellow skin and its pulp remains white for longer than other apples after cutting. It is ideal as a snack and for use in salads, baked cakes or pureed.

Cripps Pink is a variety adored by snack makers and bakers for its slightly tart flavor and crisp, firm flesh. The variety was introduced to the market in 1985 when it was brought over from its Australian origin. Named for its bright pink color, this versatile apple is ideal to bite into, also in salads, cakes, purees, baking dishes, and refrigeration.

As explained by Alejandro Díaz, Country Manager of FTA International, it is a bet so that the demand grows based on new options. Another factor in this expected growth is the improvement observed in the balanced diets of consumers, which are closely linked to the consumption of fruits and vegetables.

Quercetin, a flavonoid found naturally in apples, has been identified as one of the most beneficial flavanols for preventing and reducing the risk of pancreatic cancer and may provide a new method to prevent and treat prostate cancer, according to a study by researchers at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

Researchers at the University of California at Davis reported that daily consumption of apples and apple juice can help reduce the damage caused by bad cholesterol and provide protection against heart disease, according to the first study of its kind conducted in humans. Finally, a study by King's College London and the University of Southampton reported that people who eat at least two apples per week have a 22-32% lower risk of developing asthma than people who eat fewer apples.

“In Colombia there is room for people to eat more apples since each person consumes 1.8 kilos a year, which is about 13 apples. It is low when compared to the United States, where about 8.6 kilos are consumed per person per year, "explains Alejandro Díaz.
