EvKirito Posted December 31, 2020 Posted December 31, 2020 After the Padres acquired both Blake Snell and Yu Darvish in two trades, it's time to look at the top 10 rotations among the 30 major league teams. True, the free agent market - led by current NL Cy Young Trevor Bauer - hasn't moved much yet. So this ranking isn't exactly set in stone. But it is never too early to start discussions, as posted by Anthony Castrovince on the pages of MLB.com. Remember when the Padres traded Mike Clevinger, the best pitcher available in the middle of the 2020 season? He's not going to throw a single pitch for them in 2021, but after the acquisitions of Snell and Darvish, the Padres' rotation is aiming to be the best in all of baseball. And don't just trust my opinion. FanGraphs WAR projections have the Padres firmly in first place, more than a win over their closest pursuer. They were already very optimistic about the future outlook of a rotation with Dinelson Lamet, Chris Paddack, Adrián Morejón, MacKenzie Gore and Ryan Weathers. But with Lamet experiencing right elbow problems late last season and so many young arms still to be established, general manager A.J. Preller gave the staff stability with two experienced and winning arms. Snell is 28, has an AL Cy Young record and has shown himself capable of shooting well in the postseason. Of course, his injury history, which includes recent elbow problems, is not to be dismissed. Darvish also had elbow and tricep problems in 2018. But since the 2019 All-Star Game, he has a 2.40 ERA and a 0.88 WHIP in 157.2 innings. 4
