[Sport] UDESA presents Luis Elpidio Cumba with the Hanns Hieronimus award

Veteran sports leader Luis Elpidio Cumba was awarded the Hanns Hieronimus Award, the main recognition given by the Unión Deportiva de Santiago (UDESA).

 

In a simple act held this Friday morning on the front esplanade of the Dominican Olympic Committee (COD), Enmanuel García Musa, president of UDESA, accompanied by Mrs. Julia Lora widow Hieronimus and Ana Elsa Santos, vice president of UDESA, made delivery of a large plaque to Cumba.

 

It is the first time that the award ceremony is held outside the city of Santiago de los Caballeros, where it has been a tradition that it is held in the Grand Theater of that city.

 

Upon receiving the Cumba award, he thanked UDESA for distinguishing him with this recognition and recalled that this organization "has always fought in favor of athletes and has been one of the main historical allies of the Dominican Olympic Committee."

 

He recalled that the mission of sports unions "is to develop sport at the provincial level."

 

Cumba is a legendary Olympic leader who has held a wide range of positions in multiple sports entities and has contributed to the training of managers at all levels.

Currently he is the Director of the COD Olympic Academy.

 

 "Let's never try to retire men who serve as an example," proclaimed Luis Mejía Oviedo, president of the COD, referring to Cumba's long sporting career during the XXVIII Hanns Hieronimos award ceremony.

 

Mejía stressed that like Cumba "there are people who are born and die being educators." "Today it is recognized as a bastion of the Dominican Olympism and Central America and the Caribbean," added Mejía.

 

On his side, García Musa praised the acceptance and joy that the choice of Cumba has had to receive such an important distinction.

 

"Sport is changing but the values that Cumba represents for the Olympism remain," said García Musa.

 

He recalled that due to the health situation caused by the coronavirus pandemic, "for the first time the great act was not held in the city of Santiago de los Caballeros, at the request of Cumba he has been brought to the capital and how he has given all his life Olympism is being recognized in front of the bust of Baron Pierre de Coubertin at the COD headquarters ”.

 

Prior to the award ceremony, a portrait of Hanns Hieronimos, the name that the award bears, was presented, which was presented by Ana Elsa Santos, while Gilberto García, general secretary of the COD, presented the profile of Cumba.

 

In the activity were José Luis Ramírez, the engineer Rafael Villalona and Nelson Ramírez, as well as Cumba's wife, Mrs. Carmen Núñez and the children of the marriage Claritza Mercedes, Tamayra Indira, Edgar and Yahayra.

 

Before the event, a minute of silence was given to the memory of Alex Villegas, who passed away on Friday morning. Villegas was part of the Colimdo staff.
