The Pritikin diet was po[CENSORED]rized by its creator, Nathan Pritikin, during the 1970s. His motivation was to promote a healthy lifestyle, combining good nutrition with an exercise routine.

Its purpose was to lose weight and help improve problems related to heart health. While Pritikin was not a medical specialist, he was motivated to investigate his own heart condition on this matter, as Healthline notes.

 

Food control system
The diet is organized in a kind of traffic light whose purpose is to moderate the types of food that are consumed. In essence, this system prioritizes foods high in fiber and low in fat.

This system has three levels: forward, caution, and stop. The first level indicates which are the foods that must and can be consumed constantly.

This level includes foods such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, fish, legumes, lean proteins, and others such as nonfat yogurt, which is rich in calcium.

The level of caution includes foods that should be eaten occasionally, but should be excluded from the general diet. These include oils, anything that has to do with refined sugar, as well as refined grains, namely white bread, rice, and pasta.

The third level is stop. In this sense, they are foods that should be consumed once a month and in moderate quantities. These include processed meats, margarines, dairy, and whole fat.

 

Exercise: the supplement to the diet
But eating well is not enough. A daily exercise routine is also necessary to supplement the diet.

The exercise is divided into at least three parts: the first has to do with cardiovascular training, that is, doing cardio exercises for 30 to 90 minutes a day at least 6 times a week.

Then come the strength exercises. For these, only 3 sessions a week are necessary and perform them for 20 minutes.

Stretching exercises should be done on a daily basis and dedicate at least 10 minutes.

Something fundamental to be able to achieve the objectives set is to control stress. In fact, specialized help is needed for this part.

But what could we do if we don't have the resources to cover the costs of the program? We can follow the basic guidelines proposed to improve our quality of life.

It is not necessary to follow nutritional programs that promise us to lose weight in a miraculous way but that in the long run end up compromising our health. It would be advisable to go to a nutritionist to obtain detailed information on this subject.
