Only 1 in 10 with eating disorders receive treatment. According to the health sector, each year there are 20 thousand cases of anorexia and bulimia, and the average age of onset of these diseases ranges between 12 and 17 years. Eating disorders increased 300% in Mexico during the last 20 years. In 95% of cases, anorexia and bulimia develop from a strict diet What are eating disorders? They are diseases that are characterized by significant disorders of a person's eating behaviors. For example, obsessions with food, weight, and body shape can be signs. These disorders can affect physical and mental health and, in some cases, can be fatal. HOWEVER, eating disorders can be treated. Who is at risk for an eating disorder? They can affect anyone, men, women, of any race, etc. Although they usually appear in adolescence, they can also appear during childhood or even after the age of 40. Why? The exact cause of eating disorders is not fully understood There is research that suggests a combination of genetic, biological, behavioral, psychological and social factors that may increase the risk of having this type of disorder. Types of Eating Disorders Nervous Anorexia. They eat very little on purpose.This makes them very low body weight. They are terrified of gaining weight. They can't stand the idea of "getting fat" They have a distorted body image. They continue to look "fat" despite their low weight. People with anorexia nervosa are very strict about what to eat and how much. They may be constantly thinking about calories. To lose weight, many people with anorexia nervosa fast or exercise too much. Others may use laxatives, diuretics, or enemas. Bulimia Nervosa. They eat a lot and feel like they lose control to stop eating. They do things to compensate or correct overeating behavior. They may vomit on purpose after eating too much, or they may use laxatives, diuretics, weight loss pills, fasting, or do a lot of physical exercise. They judge themselves by their weight and how they look in the mirror. People with bulimia nervosa eat much more (over a set period of time) than most people eat. If a person binges and purges regularly, this may be a sign that they have bulimia nervosa. Binge Eating Disorder. These people eat large amounts of food even when they are not hungry. They may feel bad or guilty after bingeing They normally gain weight, and can be very overweight. Unlike people with bulimia nervosa, people with binge eating disorder do not vomit voluntarily, use laxatives, or exercise to compensate for their binge eating. Avoidant / Restrictive Eating Disorder. They have no interest in food or avoid food They lose weight or do not gain weight based on what would be expected They are not afraid of gaining weight They do not have a negative or distorted body image of themselves People with this disorder do not eat because they dislike the smell, taste, texture, or color of the food. They may be afraid of vomiting and / or choking on food and suffocation from aspiration. But they do not have anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or another medical problem. How do eating disorders affect health and emotions? These eating disorders can cause serious problems throughout the body. Anorexia nervosa: low blood pressure (or hypotension) slow pulse or irregular heart rate feeling tired, weak, dizzy, or passing out constipation and abdominal bloating irregular periods weak bones delayed puberty and slower growth than normal feeling lonely, sad, or depressed anxiety and fear of gaining weight ideas of hurting themselves Bulimia nervosa low blood pressure (or hypotension) irregular heart rate feeling tired, weak, dizzy, or passing out blood in vomit or stool (poop) tooth erosion and cavities swelling of the cheeks (salivary glands) Binge eating disorder diabetes arterial hypertension (high blood pressure) high cholesterol and high triglycerides fatty liver Sleep apnea Avoidance / restriction of intake disorder not getting enough vitamins, minerals, or protein having to feed and receive tube supplements grow less than expected 3
