During the afternoon of this Tuesday, the Government of President Sebastián Piñera proposed to the Senate the name of the judge of the Court of Appeals of Santiago, Mario Carroza, as a new member of the Supreme Court. This was reported by the Ministry of Justice through a statement, so the name of the judge must be presented before the Constitutional Commission of the Corporation, in order for him to take over in replacement of the minister and former spokesman Lamberto Cisternas. "The Ministry of Justice and Human Rights reports that the President of the Republic, Sebastian Piñera Echenique, has decided to propose to the Senate the name of the judge of the Court of Appeals of Santiago, Mario Carroza, as a new member of the Supreme Court, in replacement of Minister Lamberto Cisternas, who turned 75 years old, "said the portfolio in the statement released. Carroza has carried out a career marked by carrying out various human rights causes, as well as the murder of Senator Jaime Guzmán. The lawyer from the University of Chile joined the Judiciary in 1977 as Secretary of the Cauquenes Court of First Instance. In 2002 he arrived in Santiago as a judicial prosecutor of said court, assuming as minister in 2007. Among his resolutions is the one that condemned the former commander-in-chief of the Army Juan Emilio Cheyre for covering up in the case of the Caravan of Death. Likewise, it prosecuted the former director general of the Carabineros, Bruno Villalobos, as an accessory to torture a student in 1985, a situation that ended up being revoked by the Court of Santiago. With the above, now the Minister of Justice, Hernán Larraín will be in charge of presenting the Executive's arguments to the commission and defending the proposal, an instance that Carroza will also have to face later. After that and for its designation, the proposal must be ratified in the Senate room, with the support of two thirds of its members in office. The process is the first that occurs after the Upper House rejected the Valparaíso minister Raúl Mera and confirmed, in his replacement, Adelita Ravanales.
