[Hardware] Problems with your RAM? Don't install anything so you can identify them

Random reboots, blue screen flashes (BSOD), and system crashes can all be symptoms of computer RAM problems. Before launching yourself to replace your RAM memory or look in other ways to see what the problem is, below we are going to show you how you can identify if you actually have problems in your computer's RAM directly using the tools that Windows 10 provides as standard, without need to install additional software.

To check if your computer's RAM memory is failing you have several possibilities, from testing the memory on another computer to using third-party tools. But today we are going to show you the simplest way, since Windows 10 has an integrated tool that will allow you to identify and diagnose if your RAM is not working as it should in a simple way.

How Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool Works
Many of the troubleshooting tools in Windows 10 run automatically while you use your PC, with practically no awareness. However, the tool that we are going to use to check for RAM problems needs to restart the computer and run before startup, because that is the only way to ensure that all possible RAM can be checked.

By default, the program runs in standard mode, which makes two "passes" to the entire computer's RAM memory; then the computer starts normally and you can check the results. You can also run an advanced test if you want, being able to select cache options and increase the number of passes, although this is only in case you want to be truly sure that the RAM is working well. Keep in mind that this mode will make the test take much longer.

How to run the diagnostic tool
As we have said, this tool must be run before the system starts and therefore its execution must be scheduled. From Windows 10, click on the start button and type "memory"; The Windows Memory Diagnostic tool will appear, and you must select the option "Run as administrator".

In the window that opens, you must select if you want the PC to restart and run at this time or if you want it to be done the next time you start the computer. Of course you can also cancel if you don't want it to run in either of the two cases.

When the computer restarts you will be able to select if you want it to do the basic or advanced test as explained above. Simply select the option you want and wait for it to finish (when it does, the PC will start up normally).

Memory Diagnostic Tool

Diagnose RAM problems
Once the diagnostic tool finishes and the computer restarts, you will find the results in a log file on your desktop, but sometimes this is not the case. If this is your case, you can always check it by accessing the Windows event viewer; To do this, click on the start button and type "Event Viewer" to access.

Events viewer

In the window that opens, navigate in the left menu to Windows Registries -> System. Right-click on System and click on Search ...

Search events

Buscar eventos

In the window that opens, write "MemoryDiagnostics-Results" (without the quotes) and click on Next; the events related to the diagnosis we just executed will be displayed.

If the displayed results do not show any error or warning events (information only), then you probably have no problem with your computer's RAM memory and your problems come from another hardware component. However, if errors do appear then you should check their description and see where they come from, but possibly you do have hardware-related problems and you will be forced to change the computer's RAM (however it is common to have errors in the RAM due to Overclock to CPU, so check that too).
