The Hyundai Kona Electric has been a turning point for the South Korean group and the electrification of the automotive sector. Its market launch has been a success and this fact is corroborated by the excellent level of sales it has achieved. More than 100,000 units have already found a place in the garage and the heart of their owners, but their history still has many chapters to write. Now, a very black one could live.

One of the aspects of most concern in the development of electric vehicles is their safety. Having such a high-power accumulator is a major problem in the event of an accident. However, the evolution of technology has made it as safe as any internal combustion vehicle. That is, as long as the battery does not fail for an unknown reason and does so in several thousand units.

The Hyundai Kona Electric could catch fire just because of the battery

Apparently, in 2019 a unit of the Hyundai Kona Electric suffered a mishap in Canada. According to several sources, it was burning and in the explosion it displaced the garage door, where it was parked, on the other side of the street. But it seems that this fact was not isolated since there would have been other fires in Austria and South Korea. Therefore, faced with such a dangerous situation, the firm and LG Energy Solution would have decided to act and call them for review.

At first the number of units affected was not very clear, but it seems that we have a figure. Yonhap News has announced that the total amount would approach 80,000 and almost all have been manufactured in South Korea. Specifically until last March, since from then on it is also mounted in Europe. The question is whether the units from Nošovice (Czechia) also have the problem or are free of it.
