[Auto] Audi Q5 Sportback, all about the new SUV coupe that arrives in 2021

Audi adds a new member to its range of SUV models with a certain coupe look. First it was the Q8, and later the so-called Sportbacks would arrive, with the Audi e-tron Sportback and the successful Q3 Sportback. Now comes a product that we knew would appear sooner or later: the Audi Q5 Sportback.

As can be seen in the images, this new Audi Q5 Sportback is, in general terms, a more dynamic-looking Q5. This dynamism is achieved especially with the drop of the roof at the rear, giving a more coupe-style image. However, there are more details that we will see below.

 

Coupe SUV fashion gains momentum

The front is practically traced; such as the restyling of the Q5 presented in June. We have newly designed standard LED headlights, and optional Matrix LEDs. In addition, the grille, the lower air intakes and, in general, the entire bumper is brand new.

But where it is most striking is its side view. Coupé SUVs are gaining prominence in the market thanks to their more muscular design. It is true that the fall of the roof that begins in the central pillar should affect the distance in height of the rear seats but, as it is a very generous level in the Q5, they can afford that luxury.

Meanwhile, the rear end has a marked upper spoiler, a very raked rear window and a very aggressive fastback-type intermediate wing. Of course, at least in my view and from the images offered by Audi, it seems that the pilot lights are a bit low. I get the feeling that they cause some visual disproportion. Pilots, by the way, can have OLED technology.

Audi offers this new crossover with advanced and S line exterior trims. They differ especially in the front grille, in the side air intakes and also in the rear bumper. There are 12 body colors and various customization elements, such as the always attractive black styling package. Incidentally, it is only 7mm longer than the Q5, with a total length of 4.69 meters.

 

It barely loses 40 liters of trunk
In the cabin there are few aesthetic changes. The new screens arrive in its sister model, with 12.3 inches for the digital instrument panel and up to 10.1 in the central screen. The infotainment system carries voice recognition and control, which responds when we say "Hey Audi."

You just have to take into account the shorter distance to the ceiling in the second row, although Audi has not specifically communicated the difference. On the other hand, the trunk of the Q5 "to dry" is 550 liters. Although it may seem otherwise, this Audi Q5 Sportback cubes 510 liters, that is, it only loses 40 liters of volume despite the notable design change at the back.

Engines and market arrival
According to the brand with the four rings, at the launch of this model it will come with a 2.0-liter, 204 hp TDI turbodiesel engine. It is combined with the 7-speed dual-clutch S tronic transmission, as well as the quattro ultra traction. It has a Mild Hybrid system to reduce emissions and, in addition, in Spain it benefits from the Eco sticker from the DGT.

Audi comments that after the launch will add a TDI mechanical more than four cylinders, as well as two variants of TFSI gasoline, also in four cylinders and with 2.0 liters. A plug-in hybrid TFSIe variant has also been confirmed. Finally, there will be an Audi SQ5 Sportback with greater benefits, although for its arrival we will have to wait a little longer.

Like the normal Q5, the Audi Q5 Sportback will be produced at the brand's plant in San José Chiapa, Mexico. Its global launch is scheduled for the first half of 2021, although Audi has not specified much. On the other hand, the Q5 Sportback coming to the Chinese market is produced right there on the CKD production line at the Changchun factory.
