[Auto] BMW M4 Coupé and M4 Competition Coupé: Sportiness at the highest level

The BMW 4 Series was debuted at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in January 2013 in Detroit. The reason for its creation had to do with the separation of the two-door models of the Series 3 (coupe and convertible) into a separate family. Furthermore, in 2014, the '4 Series Gran Coupé' body style was added to the range. All with one objective: to increase your sales and economic profit.

In general, we thought that its reception by the public would be tepid. However, with the launch of the new generation of the BMW 4 Series it was confirmed that its success had been remarkable. This was the result of masterfully mixing design, sportiness and superb quality. Nor can we overlook the good work that the BMW M4 Coupé did, complementing its younger brother in the upper part of the mid-range sedan segment.

The launch of the second generation of the BMW 4 Series took place a couple of months ago. Its image comes directly from the Concept 4 that the Bavarian brand presented at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show. In it, the first thing that attracted attention was the size of the kidneys that shape the front grille. The impact on seeing it was strong and more when we had the slight suspicion that it would end up being installed in the sports version M.

Well, that is how it was in the end as the new BMW M4 Coupé appears in the images that the brand has released. In general, its appearance does not vary substantially, but it does enjoy certain accessories that make it something special. Thus, we cannot overlook the different aerodynamic appendages, the M logos or the footpegs finished in a glossy black tone. The same shade that appears on the mirror caps.

The forged aluminum wheels are exclusive and vary in size depending on the version. Nor do we overlook the roof made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) in contrast to the spoiler located on the boot lid. Finally, we cannot ignore the sports bumpers or the large diffuser located at the rear. In it, to emphasize its sportiness, it locates the four chrome (double) tailpipes.

One feature that differentiates the interior of the BMW M4 Coupé from its brother Sedan is the coloring and racing configuration. Depending on the chosen tone to dress the body, the cabin adopts different decorative moldings in this color. In contrast we have sports seats developed by M upholstered in Merino leather that can integrate the headrests and that have electrical regulation and ventilation.

This same material extends to the dashboard and doors, highlighting the sportiness of the whole. It is also striking that the baquets are made of carbon with the rear cover visible. Regarding the equipment possibilities, the M4 Coupé enjoys elements such as parking distance control, frontal collision warning, lane departure warning and speed limit information.

Finally we review the mechanical section, perhaps the one that fans of the brand and model look at. In order not to make things easy for their rivals, Bayerische has made important improvements. Thus, like its brother Series 3 M, it has a 3.0-liter gasoline block with six cylinders in line and M TwinPower Turbo technology. The power is staggered in two sections: 480 hp for the M4 and 510 hp for the M4 Competition.

The transmission available in the range is a six-speed manual for the M4 and an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic with Drivelogic and three shift programs for the M4 Competition. In addition, to avoid loss of motor skills, from next summer they will be able to count on the M xDrive all-wheel drive system equipped with an M Active differential in the rear axle.

Still, the power of the block always reaches the rear end, although it has three modes: 2WD, 4WD and 4WD Sport. On a technical level, it has the same modifications as its brother M3 Sedan, since they share a platform. In fact, the benefits are identical, signing an acceleration from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour of 4.2 seconds for the M4 Coupé and 3.9 seconds in the case of the M4 Competition Coupé.

The goal is to beat its main rivals, the Mercedes-AMG C 63 S Coupé and the Audi RS 5 Coupé. The star model has the same power and the one with the four rings is satisfied with 450 hp. Even so, the level of performance between the three is very even, especially in the acceleration section. Where we do not know if there will be differences is in prices, although until March of next year it is likely that we will not know anything.
