ITS OZX- Posted September 13, 2020 Posted September 13, 2020 (edited) Turkey is betting heavily on the eastern Mediterranean region, amid questions about the motives leading Ankara to embark on a risky adventure in order to secure a foothold in this vital region. Experts believe that Turkey has tried to gain influence in the eastern Mediterranean, since the US Geological Survey revealed the existence of important resources in this region. An American study confirmed the existence of an important reserve of energy in the eastern Mediterranean, and these resources were estimated at more than 3 thousand billion cubic meters of gas, in addition to one billion and 700 thousand barrels of oil. The importance of these wealth in the Mediterranean comes at a time when Turkey relies heavily on imports, and the country's energy bill exceeds $ 40 billion, and therefore, obtaining resources in the eastern Mediterranean would relieve Ankara from several financial burdens. In the same vein, Turkey is trying to control the route of transferring energy resources from the Middle East and some Asian countries towards Europe, despite several countries urging Ankara to exercise restraint. On the military level, Turkey wants to be present in a region that has turned into a point that attracts the world's attention and witnesses a large number of military exercises. However, this Turkish ambition is not taking place within the framework of international law, according to experts, which threatens to backfire, especially since a number of European capitals are considering imposing sanctions on Ankara.
