La importancia de una buena alimentación para prevenir el coronavirus

A balanced diet, avoiding sugars and carbohydrates and with lots of fruit and vegetables strengthens the immune system and helps to cope with confinement

Among the many ways to prevent and protect yourself from the contagion of Covid-19 is nutrition and a balanced diet. This is highlighted by the pharmacist and nutritionist Gloria Carrasco, from the La Pola de Gordón Pharmacy, who points out the important benefits of eating well and leading a healthy life to strengthen the defenses.

"Like good hygiene, nutrition is very important at this time", explains Gloria Carrasco, who highlights that a balanced and healthy diet strengthens the immune system: "The body must be prepared to fight the virus if it manages to enter" .

Therefore, having healthy habits, especially at meal times and being 'strong-willed' to control snacking between meals will be key aspects.

The recommendation is to avoid ready-made foods and prepare natural dishes. Carrasco highlights the great value of fruits and vegetables, in addition to legumes, to prepare the menu for these days of confinement. "Now we have more free time because of the quarantine and there are far fewer excuses to cook well and cook dishes with natural foods."

The nutritionist highlights the power of fruit and vitamin C, but stresses that the intake of meat, fish and eggs should not be neglected. Vegetables and fruit should be two common items on the menus and he recommends that legumes appear on them twice a week.

With so much time at home and, sometimes, boredom lurking, it is common to peck between meals. Gloria Carrasco recommends, for this, to have already cut fruit to turn to right now or to satisfy this hunger with pickles, such as olives, pickles and pickled chives. It is also a great time, she assures, to try the infusions, a drink "that satisfies, hydrates and is diuretic." This quality is shared with vegetable broths, a good option to avoid gorging on meals or dinners.

In addition, Gloria Carrasco highlights the great value of sport and physical activity these days. “We must make a hole every day to move the body, something that will also be good for the head. It is advisable to develop a routine and leave a space to do some exercise. For older people, for example, it is recommended to walk down the hall or go up and down stairs, "she says.

Healthy living and nutrition, always important, take on even more relevance with the threat of the coronavirus, since it is a time when the defenses of the human body must be in full swing.
