Elche is going to join the network of smokeless beaches in the Valencian Community with the aim of eliminating tobacco consumption in this virgin coastal area of the municipality. The measure has been approved today by the government board and for the time being it will be informative and non-sanctioning to promote healthy living habits and respect for the environment, according to the mayor of the Environment, Esther Díez. The local executive has also pointed out together that the idea in the future is to develop an ordinance with which to regulate in more detail the consumption of this substance on the beaches. To this end, the City Council is going to put signs with the initiative and they have already launched an information campaign to sensitize citizens about the importance of respecting this declaration. The local executive has in mind that tobacco consumption is reduced on the rest of the coastline to improve habits and that the beaches are not filled with cigarette butts. "Likewise, we take advantage of this measure to highlight the ecological value of Carabassí beach, which constitutes the transition zone between the marine ecosystem and the terrestrial ecosystem of Clot de Galvany, in which the dune system is particularly relevant," says the mayor. . The Councilor for Tourism, Carles Molina, also underlines this argument and points out that the benefits will mainly be for people's health and the protection of this unique environment. 5
