Manchester City are prepared to join the race for Ben Chilwell when the transfer window opens at the end of the season.

The Leicester left-back, 23, is a target for Chelsea but has also been considered at the Etihad Stadium should they need to recruit in that position.

Pep Guardiola has played Benjamin Mendy the most times at left-back this season and also has Oleksandr Zinchenko, although the Ukraine international could be moved into midfield.

Chilwell will come into Guardiola’s thinking when he needs a left-back. However, Leicester’s valuation may prove an obstacle: they rate their full-back as highly as they did Harry Maguire, who went for a world-record £85million for a defender when he joined Manchester United.

City tend to target players at the £60million to £70million bracket rather than go for record-breaking deals like their rivals. But they are ready to compete for Chilwell should he become available at the right price, with uncertainty over market values post-coronavirus pandemic.

Their current record signing is Rodri, who arrived from Atletico Madrid for £63.6million last summer, with interest cooling in Maguire when the asking price rose for the England centre-back.

Chilwell has become a regular at the King Power Stadium in the last three years, succeeding Christian Fuchs in the left-back role and earning a place in the England squad under Gareth Southgate.
