EvKirito Posted May 10, 2020 Posted May 10, 2020 This September 22 is celebrated the "World Day without Cars", a day designed to promote the reduction of pollution from cars. But this date finds the capital of the Dominican Republic with such a high density of vehicles that it qualifies as an epidemic. An analysis prepared by the Fundación Economía y Desarrollo establishes that the National District is the city with the highest number of vehicles per square kilometer (km2) in Latin America. “In the Dominican Republic there is a vehicle epidemic, and the National District is patient zero. Dominicans have managed to introduce 1.4 million vehicles in the 104.4 km2 that make up the National District, yielding a vehicle density of 13,082 vehicles per km2, the highest in all of Latin America ”, indicates the study called“ DR Vehicle Epidemic ” by Maite De Jesús in July of this 2019. Today the Week of Sustainable Mobility begins, an activity that will be developed for the second time in the country with the purpose of discouraging the use of motor vehicles a bit and promoting the use of bicycles and other more environmentally friendly means of transport. However, De Jesús argues that, apparently, Dominicans are not able to let their vehicles go because they have no other option due to the low quality of public transport and the high perception of risk associated with said services. The solution, according to De Jesús, is to eliminate public cars and introduce massive and modern public passenger transport. 1
