Ten years ago, Kia introduced the Soul; a small, spunky runabout with a modest asking price, SUV-inspired functionality, and a liberal blast of style. Unlike its competitors of the day (Honda Element, Scion XB, Nissan Cube) the Soul endures, as signified by the recent launch of the 3rd-generation 2020 Kia Soul.

We just returned from San Diego having driven the 2020 Kia Soul in two forms; the X-Line and the GT-Line. The X-Line sports plastic body-cladding and a rugged demeanor (but doesn’t offer all-wheel drive) while the GT-Line injects sporty flair into the Soul formula via racier front and rear fascias, 18-inch wheels, and red accents. The GT-Line can also be equipped with a turbocharged 1.6-liter engine making 201 horsepower. That a notable bump from the naturally-aspirated 147-horsepower 2.0-liter powering all other Soul trims.

Electric Soul coming

The Soul’s lineup will also include trims ranging from the simple LX, the distinct EX Designer Collection, a cheaper GT-Line featuring the base engine, and a pure-electric Soul EV. That last one might be the most interesting of the bunch, delivering a predicted 243 miles of range, and utilizing an independent rear suspension as opposed to the simpler twist-beam setup found on all other Kia Souls.

Our first taste of the 2020 Soul was brief but left us filled with good vibes. Ride quality has improved, the exterior design looks both familiar and fresh, and the interior remains unexpectedly spacious given the Soul’s size. We look forward to spending more time behind the wheel…especially that Soul EV.

Class of 2020: The New and Redesigned Cars, Trucks and SUVs

The Soul’s upright SUV-like stance seemed novel when it debuted a decade ago. These days desire for an upright form factor is stronger than ever among car buyers. The latest Soul comes competitively-priced in a single body style that is well-poised to battle tall front-drive SUV competitors like the Nissan Kicks and Toyota CH-R. It will also need to battle a new competitor from Kia’s parent company, too: the 2020 Hyundai Venue.

Models, Features and Prices

The new Soul is offered in seven trim levels, with the base LX featuring modern necessities like air conditioning, power accessories, and a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The manual transmission is limited to the base LX trim while the 1.6-liter turbocharged engine can only be found as an option on the sporty and comparatively pricey $28,485 GT-Line 1.6T.
