Neymar Jr will become the world’s most expensive footballer when his impending €222 million move to Paris Saint-Germain finally goes through, bringing his four year spell at Barcelona to an end.
Despite being just 25, the Brazilian superstar has enjoyed a short but remarkably eventful and decorated career. Here is the Neymar story so far…
Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior, to give him his full name, was born in São Paulo on 5 February 1992. His father, Neymar Santos Sr, was a former footballer himself, and now works as his son’s advisor.
“My father has been by my side since I was little. He takes care of things, my finances and my family,” Neymar Jr told CNN in 2012.

Neymar began his career at youth club Portuguesa Santista before joining the Santos academy in 2003. In March 2009, he made his professional debut as a 17-year-old, coming off the bench in a 2-1 win over Oeste.
He scored on his full debut before netting the winner in a Campeonato Paulista semi-final first leg victory over Palmeiras the following month, ending his maiden season with 14 goals in 48 games for Peixe.

That summer, Neymar wowed onlookers when playing for Brazil at the U-17 World Cup, prompting Brazilian legends Pelé and Romario to urge Dunga to select the youngster in the senior squad for the following year’s World Cup. Neymar didn’t end up making the 23-man cut for the 2010 tournament, but was on the stand-by list.
His meteoric rise continued the following season as Neymar helped Santos to the Campeonato Paulista and Copa do Brasil double with a remarkable 42 goals in 60 games. The teenager came third in the 2010 South American Footballer of the Year award and attracted interest from Premier League clubs West Ham United and Chelsea.

“The 18-year-old is a magnificent prospect,” said South American football journalist Tim Vickery that year. “He is sleek and skilful, able to beat the defender on either side, capable of combining well, and full of tricks he can put to productive use in and around the penalty area.” Neymar helped Santos to another championship in 2011, as well as the club’s first Copa Libertadores triumph since 1963, and was voted South American Footballer of the Year by a record margin. His amazing solo goal against Flamengo also won the 2011 FIFA Puskás Award for goal of the year.

Neymar was the leading goalscorer at the 2011 South American Youth Championship, including a brace in Brazil’s 6-0 victory over Uruguay in the final, and he was also called up to Verde-Amarela’s 2011 Copa America squad. 2012 yielded another championship for Santos and a second consecutive South American Footballer of the Year award for Neymar, prompting speculation that Barcelona had agreed a deal to sign him at a later date. He was included in Brazil’s London 2012 Olympic Games squad and scored three times en route to the final, which Brazil lost to Mexico. Neymar played his emotional final match for Santos on 26 May 2013 before completing a €57.1 million move to Barcelona, where he signed a five-year contract. A record 55,000 supporters packed into Camp Nou to greet their new hero at his official presentation.
