Even if it has already left us behind the wheel, the new A3 had not yet removed its camouflage. She finally agrees to do so, and takes the opportunity to reveal the essentials of her secrets. A pioneer of compact "premium" models, the A3 finds itself today in the role of dean of this subcategory. Delayed by the "dieselgate", its fourth generation is indeed long overdue. But it is now revealed in broad daylight ... and confirms that the aesthetic evolution remains slight. In profile, this five-door Sportback body, the only one proposed pending the future four-door sedan, retains the air of a short break. This does not prevent him from building up his game like his little sister A1, with a slot under the hood, more angular features and sharper optics with a modernized light signature. Touch but not excess Three centimeters longer and wider than its predecessor, this 2020 A3 rests on the same MQB base as before and on an unchanged wheelbase. Suffice to say that it does not promise huge gains in habitability. However, in the front seats, everything changes. Forget the round aerators or the retractable screen of the current model. As on the last Q3, the panel is finally tactile and is now installed quite low, while the grids take a rectangular shape. The assembly remains however wiser than on the close cousin Volkswagen Golf 8, with more physical buttons for the orders of the daily newspaper. For ergonomics, this is rather good news. Lightweight or rechargeable hybrid Both inside and out, these two compacts manage to hide their family ties quite well. But under the hood, the differences tend to fade. We thus find the same petrol engines "mainstream", the three-cylinder 1.0 TSI and the four-cylinder 1.5 TSI, which now have a light 48-volt hybridization in combination with the DSG double clutch box. The two plug-in hybrid versions, with the same 1.4 TSI four-cylinder, boast 204 or 245 hp. As for diesel, it remains represented by the only 2.0 TDI, which should offer from 116 to 200 hp. For an A3 with truly exclusive mechanics, we will have to wait for the future RS3, still powered by a five-cylinder. But in this case, the bill will reach heights that few French people can afford.
