Aveyro Posted March 22, 2020 Posted March 22, 2020 Italy continues to count its dead. A total of 5,476 people have been killed by the Covid-19 pandemic, a coronavirus-related disease in the country, where 651 people have died in the past 24 hours, according to figures released Sunday March 22 by civil protection. The figure is lower than that announced on Saturday (793, a record), but it is still the second heaviest assessment since the start of the pandemic. The total number of positive cases also increased by just over 10% (59,158 or 5,560 more than on Saturday). The most affected region, Lombardy, remained in a critical situation with 3,456 deaths and 27,206 cases of contamination, against 3,095 deaths and 25,515 contaminations on Saturday. Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte announced on Saturday that "all production activity in the territory that would not be strictly necessary" would be stopped. Only essential public services and economic sectors will be maintained. These measures "are severe, I know. But we have no alternative. We must resist," said the head of government.
