Lexman. Posted January 3, 2020 Posted January 3, 2020 TeamMONASH has claimed five pennants at Unisport Division 1 Nationals as over 5000 students from 41 universities descended on the Gold Coast for the biggest and best sporting event the sunshine state has ever seen (pfft who cares about the Commonwealth Games right?)!!! Monash Cheer and Dance won an astonishing seven medals on Wednesday night of the competition. The six gold medals and one silver medal left them clear winners of the overall pennant in both Cheer and Dance divisions. Our Beach Volleyball Mixed team lived up to the hype around one of Monash’s fastest growing Nationals squads, claiming the Gold in an undefeated finals lead up. The Men’s Doubles took fourth and Women fifth in a highly competitive draw. The Badminton Men’s team have returned as Div 1 champions for an astonishing fourth consecutive year, after taking on one of the toughest pools of the competition and defeating close rivals Melbourne Uni in the Semi Finals. The team faced University of New South Wales in the final, winning in three straight matches. The Women’s Basketball team went above and beyond in their debut at the Nationals Div 1, defeating Melbourne Uni 76-71 in the Gold Medal match to claim their second Nationals championship of the year. The team was promoted from Div 2 after winning the competition in July this year, and had a near perfect run to finals despite showcasing seven Div 1 Nationals debutants. While on the Gold Coast, the athletes were proud to support two special causes close to the hearts of Monash students. On Wednesday, TeamMONASH donned Respect. Now. Always socks in a public display of University Australia’s endeavour to end sexual harassment and assault on university campuses. The next day, the athletes wore purple ribbons in memory of former Monash softball team captain Alysha Waye. Alysha passed away earlier this year after a long battle with brain cancer, and was remembered by the students this year for her tireless efforts to raise money for the Cure Brain Cancer foundation.
