Oscar Aguad: "Radicalism strengthens government"

A few days after finishing his administration and without having received signals from the future leaders of the Ministry of Defense, Oscar Aguad granted an interview to Infobae in which he made a management balance and referred to the role of the UCR in Cambiemos.

As a militant and radical leader, how do you observe your party after the government experience within the Let's Change front?

- Fortified by this management, since it was reunited with that wide strip of society that historically felt represented by radicalism. It was also reaffirmed its national party character representing the various regions, cultures and po[CENSORED]tions. The recovery of the republican system, the independence of the Judiciary and the transparency of government acts, have always been a priority for radicalism.

Could you summarize what, in your opinion, were the successes and mistakes of the Government?

- I think that the change of course is the most significant of the Macri management. Beyond that the results that are always tied to national and international conjuncture factors, the conditions imposed by world markets and the interdependence resulting from globalization. But without a doubt the balance is positive.

Change of course?

-When I talk about a change of course, I mean the possibility of seeing reality as it is and without ideological prejudices. The populism that hit the country for so many years ignores the problems, hides or disguises them and consequently never solves them. This is due to the systematic delay of Argentina in the last 70 years. Macri put reality on the table creating the conditions for the country to produce at least what it consumes. Under that deficit lies underdevelopment and poverty, there is hidden inflation and trade imbalance, the lack of a solid currency, the unbearable tax pressure and all other reasons that prevented creating employment and eradicating poverty.

But the results of the management have not been as expected ...

-If management is projected in the medium and long term, the results are highly positive. First of all because we know what the problems are, then because many of those problems have been solved. To give an example, the balance in the political system was recovered, the functioning of the institutions was recovered, public spending was reduced by 7%, press freedom was guaranteed, the fiscal deficit was reduced by more than 6 points and The government's current account ends with a surplus. We achieved the self-supply of gas and oil, important infrastructure works were made and we became connected with the world in an intelligent way. If you insist on this path, the country can begin to meet the expectations of the vast majority of Argentines.

What do you think will be the biggest challenge of the new government?

-Keep the course, continue to reduce the unviable public spending, bring it to reasonable values and achieve quality investments that give work to the almost 400,000 young people who enter the labor market every year. If it fails in the first two objectives, the third is unfeasible.

Is he not asking the new government for something that Macri's could not achieve?

-This is a process, what you can't do is go back and repeat the mistakes of the past. If Alberto Fernández makes strategic sense and builds confidence, the country will solve its problems much sooner than we think.
