Some fifty people, mostly children, were injured in a nursery school in China where an individual sprayed caustic soda on students and teachers, local authorities announced Tuesday.

The assault took place on Monday at 3:35 p.m. local time (7:35 GMT) in the city of Kaiyuan, in Yunnan province, authorities said on the Weibo social network.

The city council said a 23-year-old suspect named Kong scaled the school wall and threw caustic soda at the victims.

A total of 53 children and three teachers were admitted to the hospital for care. Two people have "severe symptoms" but are not in danger, local authorities said.

According to the city, the behavior of Kong, the main suspect, is explained because his parents divorced and "the lack of family love caused a psychological imbalance."

In China there were other similar attacks against schools. In November 2018, a 20-year-old man killed a student in a polytechnic school, also in Yunnan province.
