A mammoth trap of 15,000 years was discovered in Mexico

The pits are about 1.70 meters deep and 25 meters in diameter

Mexican anthropologists say they have discovered two man-made pits dug 15,000 years ago for trapping mammoths.

Researchers at the Mexican National Institute of Anthropology and History said the pits were discovered during excavations of land that was to be used as a dump.

Pits filled with bones of at least 14 mammoths were discovered in the Tultepec neighborhood north of Mexico City.

Some of the animals were apparently slaughtered. The pits are about 1.70 meters deep and 25 meters in diameter.

The institute said hunters may have chased mammoths into traps.

Researchers believe they made the first ever human mammoth trap find.

"This is the largest find of its kind ever made," a statement from the institute said.

Researchers say at least five mammoth herds have lived in the area.

Mexico has been the scene of mammoth surprise discoveries before.

In the 1970s, workers building the subway in Mexico City discovered a skeleton of a mammoth while digging on the north side of the capital.
