The former player Roberto Baggio, one of the greatest in the history of Italian football, whose career was weighed down by a series of serious injuries, acknowledged that he asked his mother to kill him after breaking the cruciate ligament of his right knee and receiving 200 internal stitches.

Baggio, who played with Fiorentina, Juventus, Milan or Inter, among other teams, and who was the Golden Ball in 1993, explained that he lived with pain throughout his career and that his first injury left him extremely touched, in his participation in the Sports Festival organized by "La Gazzetta dello Sport" in Trento.

“At that moment I ask my mother to kill me. I say ‘Mom, if you love me, kill me’, ”said Baggio, who was injured in May 1985 shortly after formalizing his signing for Fiorentina from Vicenza.

That serious injury required a complicated operation, in years in which medical technology still did not have the resources of today, with the perforation of the tibia and the use of 200 internal stitches, the former Italian player recalled.

For Baggio it was the beginning of a calvary of injuries, with problems in the meniscus and tendon of the right knee and a new crusader rupture, this time on the left, suffered in 2002 when he was active in Brescia.

These experiences, Baggio explained, led him to approach the Buddhist religion in 1985.

“I was looking for something that made me understand that everything depended on me. I used to blame others. I was the victim and the others were responsible for my suffering. Buddhism helped me understand that everything starts with me, ”he said.

In his appearance at the Sports Festival, Baggio also highlighted his gratitude to the fans of Fiorentina, who always sustained him despite his long months off due to injuries.

His goodbye to the Florentine club to sign for the historic rival Juventus was accompanied by some tough controversies, but Baggio considered that this was caused by the lack of clarity of the Tuscan team's directive, which no longer considered him a key point of the sports project.J5Z3YQGDQNA6NBJUFTNY7655M4.jpg
