Its headquarters are located in Toyota (Aichi) and Bunkyō (Tokyo) although, due to its multinational nature, it has factories and offices around the world.3

In 2017 it has also been named as the most valuable car brand with a brand value of 28.7 billion dollars.7 It is considered, together with Nissan Motors and Honda Motor, one of the "three big" Japanese car companies. According to the Global Automation Report 2018 made by the KPMG consultancy, the Toyota group considered the best positioned automation brand for an immediate future five years ahead of BMW and Tesla.8

Its range of products and services includes the manufacture, transportation and maintenance of cars, trucks, buses and robots (not for sale to the public). We also provide financial services, through its subsidiary Toyota Financial Services, and participate in other business lines. It manufactures vehicles under the Toyota and Lexus brands, owns 100% of the shares of Daihatsu, 9 large investments in Hino10 and 16.5% of Fuji Heavy Industries that manufactures Subaru11 vehicles. Toyota has a large market share in the United States, Europe and Africa and is the market leader in Australia. It also has specific market shares in several countries in Southeast Asia.12

Toyota has a strong innovation character in the automotive sector13: it commercialized the first automatic parking system14, the first automatic gearbox with 8 and 10 speeds15, the real-time traffic guidance system with dynamic route reallocation or the control of Four-zone air conditioning with infrared technology16.

History
origins

Kiichiro Toyota engineer and founder of Toyota
Toyota Motor Corporation was founded on September 23, 193329 when Toyoda Automatic Loom created a new division dedicated to automobile production directed by Kiichiro Toyoda son of the founder Sakichi Toyoda.30 Although the Toyota group is best known today for its cars are still present in textile businesses and in the manufacture of automatic looms and electric sewing machines.31

The AA (in the image a replica) was the first automobile manufactured by Toyota, when the company was still called Toyoda, in 1936.
Shortly after the foundation of the automotive division was produced its first engine, type A (1934), which was used in its first car model - called A1- (May 1935) and the first truck - called G1- (August 1935). Production of the AA model began in 1936.32

In 1937 Toyota Motor Co. was established as an independent company. Although the last name of the founding family is Toyoda (豊 田) it was decided to modify the name of the company to Toyota since its pronunciation is simpler and its writing symbolizes a happy start: Toyota (ト ヨ タ) in Japan is considered more fortunate than Toyoda (豊 田) since eight is considered a lucky number and eight is the number of strokes needed to write Toyota in Katakana. In Chinese, the company and its vehicles are still referred to by the equivalent characters (Traditional Chinese: 豐田; Simplified Chinese: 丰田), with Chinese reading.

During the [[World War II] the company dedicated itself to the production of trucks for the Imperial Japanese Army. Because of the severe shortage in Japan, military trucks were manufactured in the simplest way possible, for example by equipping them with only one headlight in the center of the hood.33 The contest ended shortly before an allied bombing scheduled at Toyota factories. in Aichi, which prevented the destruction of the company's facilities.

50s

The SA (1947-1952) was the first tourist car manufactured by Toyota after World War II.
After World War II the production of commercial cars resumed in 1947 with the launch of the SA.35 model. In 1950 an independent sales company was founded, called Toyota Motor Sales Co., whose activity lasted until July 1982.

In May 1953, 5 units of the Toyota Land Cruiser were exported to El Salvador, becoming the first Toyota vehicles to reach the Americas.36 The next step was the inauguration, in April 1956, of the Toyopet marketing and service network. 37

The following year the Toyota Crown, after starting its commercialization as an export vehicle in countries such as Thailand or Brazil, became the first Japanese car marketed in the United States.38 Also in 1957 the American Toyota divisions were created (Toyota Motor Sales Inc.) and Brazilian (Toyota do Brasil SA).

Toyota began to expand in the 1960s with a new research and development facility and Thailand opened a specific division. The 10 million unit was produced and the company's products began to be recognized by obtaining, in May 1965, the Deming Prize.39 The company also partnered with other Japanese car companies such as Hino Motors and Daihatsu.

The Corolla, one of the brand's most iconic cars, began marketing in 1966.
In 1966 the Toyota Corolla40 was presented in Japan, one of the brand's most emblematic models. In 2005 it was recognized as the first car to exceed 30 million units sold according to the Guinness Book of Records41. With 44 million units registered in 150 countries until 2016, it is listed as the best-selling tourism car in the world.42

The expansion continued throughout the 1970s. The company was granted its first Japanese Quality Control at the beginning of the decade and a presence in motor racing was established.

Lexus is Toyota's brand for its luxury car division, just as Audi is for Volkswagen or Infiniti is for Nissan.55 Lexus vehicles are sold in North America, the Middle East, Europe, Africa, Latin America, Asia and Oceania. In the United States, the first country in which Lexus was introduced as a brand of Toyota's differentiated luxury cars, it is the brand of its best-selling segment. There was the paradox that until 2005 Lexus vehicles were sold under the Toyota brand in Japan but, since then, the Lexus brand was introduced.56

Since its debut in 1989, Lexus has developed a reputation for the reliability of its vehicles and the quality of its customer service.57 In 2001, the customer valuation firm J.D. Power named Lexus the most reliable brand in the United States based on its vehicle reliability survey analyzing more than 47,000 vehicle owners and the problems they experienced in the first three years of vehicle ownership. It was the twelfth consecutive year that Lexus achieved top position.58 That same year Consumer Reports also named Lexus the most reliable brand in its annual auto reliability survey of more than one million vehicles nationwide.59 Lexus also It ranks high in surveys of service experience at dealerships. 60
