Nintendo Switch (ニ ン テ ン ド ー ス イ ッ チ Nintendō Suitchi?) Is the ninth main video game console developed by Nintendo. Known in development by its code name «NX», it was released in October 2016 and was launched worldwide on March 3, 2017.

Nintendo considers Switch a hybrid console. It can be used as a desktop console with the main unit inserted in a docking station to connect it to a television. Alternatively, it can be extracted from the base and used in a similar way to a tablet through its LCD touch screen, or placed on a surface thanks to its integrated plastic support, thus being visible by several players.

The Switch uses two wireless controllers called Joy-Con altogether, which include four standard action buttons and a directional joystick, as well as sensors for motion detection and high definition touch feedback, although they differ in some additional buttons and features. Two Joy-Con can be connected to each side of the console for use as a portable console, connected to the Grip accessory provided next to the console for use as a more traditional controller, or used individually in the hand as the Wii controller, and This form is used with local multiplayer games. You can also use certain wireless and / or wired controls that are not included in the console, adopted as Pro Controller, which include the same features as traditional controls except that this includes NFC detection for Amiibo and HD vibration.

Games for this console and other applications are available as physical flash ROM cartridges and as digital distribution, and do not use region lock. The Switch competes in the video game market with its contemporary Sony PlayStation 4 and Microsoft Xbox One.

The Switch concept emerged as a reaction from Nintendo to several quarters of financial losses in 2014, attributed to the poor sales of its previous console, the Wii U, as well as increased competition in the mobile device gaming market. Subsequently, Nintendo's president, Satoru Iwata, pushed the company in the direction of mobile games and the creation of completely new hardware.

The design of the Switch is aimed at a broad demography of video game players through its multiple modes of use. Nintendo chose to use more standard electronic components, such as a processor based on the Nvidia Tegra line, to make console development easier for programmers and more compatible with existing game engines. As the Wii U had had difficulty obtaining support from external studios, leaving it with a weak game library, Nintendo sought the support of many developers and publishers to help build the Switch game library along with Nintendo's own titles. , including many independent video game studios. Prior to launch, Nintendo had announced that more than 100 titles were under development by 70 developers.

Nintendo sold more than 2.74 million units of the console in its first month of being on sale, exceeding the initial projection of 2 million units made by the company, and becoming the fastest desktop console that has been sold of its history. Switch sales were closely linked to those of critically acclaimed video game The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which was released the same day as the worldwide console.

On September 20, 2019, a revised version of Nintendo Switch will be released, maintaining the size of the "old" version and with a longer battery life.

Firmware
Switch firmware is compatible with online games through standard internet connectivity, as well as local wireless ad hoc connectivity with other Switch.

The Nintendo Switch
The Nintendo Switch is a hybrid game console, with the main system based on the Switch console, the base of the Switch and the Joy-Con controls. Despite being a hybrid console, Fils-Aime has said that the Switch is essentially "a desktop console that you can take wherever you want."

Fils-Aime has ensured that 3DS, its current portable console, "has a long life ahead," and that it and the Switch are destined to coexist according to Nintendo's point of view. While Nintendo does not consider the Switch as a successor to the Wii U, no units other than those scheduled until March 2017 will officially be sent after the date mentioned.52

In addition, Nintendo announced that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which will be a launch title for the Switch, will be the last game developed by Nintendo that will be released for Wii U.53 Nintendo anticipates selling two million Nintendo Switch consoles to end of the first month of the console, and that will have enough units to reach the demand, unlike what happened with the NES Mini at the end of 2016.54 Nintendo does not want to sell the console at a lower price than manufacturing, as they did with the 3DS and the Wii U in their respective releases.55

The Switch is sold in a package that has a recommended price of € 329.99, ¥ 29 980 (Japan), $ 299.99 (US), £ 279.99 (United Kingdom) or AU $ 469.95 ( Australia) .56 57 The package includes the Switch console, the base, two Joy-Con (left and right), two straps for the Joy-Con, the housing, a power adapter and an HDMI cable. 58 Fils -Aime has said that the company has tried to maintain the price of the package at $ 300 in the United States and that any additional accessory or game would increase the price to a level that would disinterested consumers and hurt sales.
